Holiday Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata)
Holiday (Christmas) cactus, as it is commonly referred to, scientifically known as Schlumbergera, is a charming and distinctive succulent plant that blooms around the holiday season. Unlike the typical image of a cactus, Christmas cacti are native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil and are epiphytic, meaning they grow on other plants rather than in soil.
Key attributes of Christmas cacti include their flattened stems with serrated edges, which can vary in shades of green. During the holiday season, they produce showy, tubular flowers that come in an array of colours, including pink, red, white, and sometimes a blend of these hues. The blooming period typically occurs in late fall or early winter, coinciding with the festive season.
Christmas cacti prefer bright, indirect light and well-draining soil for optimal care. Keeping the soil consistently moist without overwatering is crucial, especially during the blooming period. With their unique appearance and ability to bloom just in time for the holidays, Christmas cacti make for a delightful and enduring addition to indoor gardens.
Available in a variety of colours and sizes.
Please note we do not carry “true” Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesii).
